School fees set to rise under Labor
Non-government schools fees are set to rise under a re-elected Labor Government, Christopher Pyne, Shadow Minister for Education said today.
"Both Simon Crean and Julia Gillard are refusing to guarantee that no non-government school will be worse off in real terms after the review of the existing funding model," Mr Pyne said.
"Mr Crean has brushed aside concerns of the National Catholic Education Commission, who have sought a guarantee from Labor that the existing indexation of school funding will continue to increase in real terms to cover rising costs," he said.
The National Catholic Education Commission represents Catholic Schools, the second largest provider of education in Australia after the Government sector.
Mr Crean needs to confirm before the election that no non-government school will be worse off in real terms.
Parents who scrimp and save to be able to afford to send their children to a non-government school deserve an answer to that question. So do the schools that have to plan and make funding decisions.
People should never forget that it was Julia Gillard and the Labor Party who devised the private school hit list in 2004.
I have met with the Chair of the Catholic Education Commission today and assured them that a Coalition Government will continue existing indexation arrangements for non-government school funding giving the sector the confidence to plan for the future," Mr Pyne said.
