Move towards autonomy welcomed

The Shadow Minister for Education, Christopher Pyne today welcomed the New South Wales Government’s move towards greater autonomy for indigenous schools.

“Autonomy frees schools from bureaucratic shackles and enables greater engagement with communities and tailored initiatives to improve education at the coal-face,” Mr Pyne said.

“I have seen the benefits this brings in Western Australia where schools - some in very low socio-economic areas - have increased school retention rates and boosted parental involvement.

“These schools in Western Australia have been transformed by simply having the power to decide how to spend their own funds, who to hire and how to engage with students and the community.

“Across Australia it is the Liberal State Governments and Liberal Oppositions who are pushing towards greater school autonomy and the Federal Coalition would support giving every government school the option to become an independent government school,” Mr Pyne said.
