Harry holds himself to a higher standard
Harry Jenkins’ decision to retire at the next election is a loss to the Parliament, but our loss will be his family’s gain.
I always found Mr Jenkins a fair Speaker. It is a tough job and he did his best to perform with dignity.
Unfortunately the Prime Minister’s desire to secure another vote in the House of Representatives means Mr Jenkins’ legacy as Speaker has been overshadowed by the manner of his departure from the chair.
The Coalition wishes him the very best in his retirement.
