Gillard Government hypocrisy over cuts
The Minister for School Education shouldn’t be throwing stones in glass houses over education cuts, said the Shadow Minister for Education, Christopher Pyne today.
“Since Mr Garrett is so critical of cuts, he should explain why he is planning on cutting the average staffing level by 1,145 from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations according to the 2012 Budget papers,” Mr Pyne said.
“He might also care to explain what has become of the Computers in Schools Programme in the Federal Budget,” he said.
“Once the centrepiece of Labor’s ‘education revolution’, ongoing funding for the programme has vanished from the Budget forward estimates, leaving the States to foot the bill for new computers and maintenance of existing computers.
“Similarly, the Trades Training Centre programme has been suspended leaving the promise of a centre for every high school in Australia in limbo.
“Given Labor has a $120 billion Budget Black Hole and since Mr Garrett is so critical of others, it is only appropriate that he immediately rule out any further Gillard Government cuts to education,” Mr Pyne said.
