Carr did not use “the same form of words”

Minister Gillard has claimed in Question Time that today’s statement in the Senate by Minister Carr, the basis upon which the Coalition has supported the Schools Assistance Bill, is nothing new, and only reflects “the same form of words” she herself used in Hansard.

The comments of Minister Carr upon which the Opposition made its decision did indeed represent new contributions to the Parliamentary debate – as was recognised by Senator Xenophon in his contribution to the Senate – and do finally give schools the comfort and reassurance they need.

It is sad and disappointing that the Deputy Prime Minister sees this as a political game. The Opposition is only concerned about quality schooling for Australian children.

·Today in the Senate, Minister Kim Carr said (according to Hansard): “The national curriculum will not mandate particular classroom practices.”

There is no Hansard record of Minister Julia Gillard using “the same form of words” in the House. This is because she has not done so.

Obviously the Minister has too much on her plate to check the details of her own speeches. It is time for her to give up one of her portfolios.
